Wars are fought with weapons but won with advisers.
Many of us are at a stage of life where we do not wish to be told what we should or should not do, especially when it comes to our personal choices like drinking, smoking, careers, etc. We prefer to learn by mistakes rather than learning by choice, which is good but only in some cases.
We need to understand the importance of taking advice in life, not only from our elders but sometimes from the ones who are younger than us. I might sound a little old school in the concept, but in reality, we must learn to take advice in every step of our life. Why? The answer is simple. The world is full of people, and many of them have experienced things that we might have never even thought of, so when you ask for a piece of advice from your elder or someone who you consider wise, they might be able to tell you a different perspective towards the problem, or sometimes even give you the answer to the problem. Kings never fought a war without having advisers or strategists around him, and you should do exactly the same.
I am not asking you to rely on people for advice; I am asking you to consider what other people are saying and do your research on the topic and then make a decision. Growing up in different cities and countries I have noticed people are often reluctant towards taking advice. The feeling of inferiority takes place, which hinders an individual's growth.
We are surrounded by the wise and the fools at the same time, so we must do our research before believing anyone. The decision will always be yours. The consequences, be it good or bad will be yours. So, take advice, research, and then make a decision.
